2013 Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee Spotlight: Tony Hall '77

Tony Hall Springfield, Mass. - October 17, 2013 - Royden A. “Tony” Hall ('77) is one of six inductees who will be enshrined into the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 26. The 2013 hall of fame class will be inducted at the Alumni Awards and Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner at 7:30 p.m. as part of Homecoming Weekend festivities.

Hall is one of the most accomplished gymnasts in Springfield College history.

In four years, Hall was named an All-American eight times. He was the four-time recipient of the Leslie J. Judd Award, given to the MVP of the gymnastics team.

Hall was crowned the national champion on the vault as a sophomore in 1975, and he won the New England All-Around championship. That same season, Hall helped lead Springfield to a win over Penn State at home. Penn State went on to win the NCAA Division I national title later that year.

In his senior season, Hall earned All-America honors in four events (all-around, parallel bars, rings and vault) and the Pride went on to win the NCAA Division II national team title. Hall had the second place All-Around score at the NCAA Division II championship, earning the right to compete at the NCAA Division I championship.

In 1997, the state of Rhode Island proclaimed a day “Tony Hall Day,” to celebrate his accomplishments in gymnastics at Springfield College.

His coach, Frank Wolcott '52, G'60, says Hall was, "the most outstanding all-around gymnast [he had coached between] 1955 [and] his graduation year in 1977."

Before his time at Springfield College, Hall was a standout gymnast in high school, winning the Rhode Island High School All-Around championship in the early 1970s.

After his time at Springfield, Hall coached boys and girls gymnastics for 10 years at the YMCA of Concord, New Hampshire.

Hall not only found athletic success at Springfield College, but he also found his wife, Karen ’78. The couple recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary. They have two sons, Chris and Trevor; a daughter-in-law, Katie; and a granddaughter, Olivia.

Other 2013 inductees include Kevin Cahill (’01, G’04), Howie Davis, Sherren Granese (’83), Donta Johnson (’98, G’00) and Bob Pataky (’57, G’69).
