Men's Gymnastics Competes In Opening Night of USAG Championships

Ryan Ponce Annapolis, Md. - March 21, 2014 - The Springfield College men’s gymnastics team competed in the opening night of the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championship on Friday evening and registered a team score of 403.10.

Air Force claimed the Varsity Division team title with a 426.70 and was followed by William & Mary (422.75), Army (414.60), Navy (413.65) and Springfield (403.10). Arizona State won the Collegiate Division team title with a 405.85 and was followed by Washington (383.65) and Brockport (185.70).

Friday night's competition determined the USAG All-Around competition, and Jon Zirna (Buffalo, N.Y) placed ninth in the with a score of 79.950.

The Pride had six student-athletes, one in each event, qualify to compete in Saturday's event finals.

On the rings, Ryan Ponce (Tolland, Conn.) recorded a 15.65, while Zirna notched a 14.4 on the floor exercise. Pat Ryther (Boston, Mass.) totaled a score of 13.85 on the pommel horse and Tucker McClure (San Jose, Calif.) tallied a 14.1 on the vault.

On the parallel bars, Sam Docherty (Upton, Mass.) scored a 13.65 and Andy Grabowski (Victor, N.Y.) registered a 13.8 on the high bar.
