Springfield, Mass. -- September 6, 2008 -- Senior Matt Montgomery (Colchester, Conn.) found the back of the net with 2:04 remaining in regulation to tie the contest as the Springfield College men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie against cross-town rival Western New England on Saturday afternoon.
With the tie, Springfield moves to 0-0-1 on the early season, while WNEC moves to 1-1-1.
With 25:30 left in the first half, Dan Hare netted the first goal of the game for the visiting Golden Bears. Hare took a feed at the top of the box, made a move to his left, and fired a shot into to the left corner of the net to put WNEC on top, 1-0.
The Golden Bears controlled the rest of the first half, earning eight corner kicks, as both teams battled the high humidity and heat.
The Pride finally netted the equalizer with 2:04 left in the game. Josh Severns (Suffield, Conn.) took the ball off a throwline and dribbled the ball down the right sideline and centered the ball to an oncoming John Plourd (Southampton, Mass.). Plourd flicked on a centering pass to Montgomery, who bent a beautiful shot into the upper right corner of the net to bring the home crowd to its feet.
Kevin Leahy (Cheshire, Conn.), making his first collegiate start in goal, made five saves for the Pride. The Pride defensive unit, headed by senior captains Dan Cotter (Stoughton, Mass.) and Scott Swanekamp (Allentown, N.J.) held WNEC off the scoreboard the final 89 minutes of the game.
Springfield turns right back around to take on Salve Regina on Sunday afternoon. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 pm.
