



Springfield, Mass. -- October 9, 2010 -- Freshman Lauren Quisenberry led her MIT women's tennis team to a 6-3 victory over Springfield College this afternoon on a sunny and breezy day at SC's Julius Appleton Courts. With the win, MIT ups its record to 5-2 overall, 5-1 in NEWMAC play. The Pride falls to 3-5 overall, 1-4 in the league.Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, Tex.) had a good day, first teaming up with fellow freshman Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. Quisenberry later won her match at No. 1 singles, defeating SC senior co-captain Amy Shaw (Walpole, Mass.), 6-0, 6-0.
MIT won all three doubles matches, setting the tone.
When Quisenberry won at No. 1 singles, and senior Jenny Dohlman (Wellesley, Mass.) won at No. 6 singles, MIT garnered all the team points it would need to capture the match.
At No. 2, Hsu defeated sophomore Sam Carney (Franklin, Mass.), 6-4, 7-6(2), in a hard-fought match.
Springfield fought back to win the No. 3 through 5 singles. Freshman Jen Cleary (Nahant, Mass.) was a winner at No. 3, 6-4, 6-4; sophomore Erin Woodbury (Yarmouth, Me.) took a marathon match at No. 4, 7-5, 7-6 (12-10 in the tiebreaker); and senior co-captain Kyla Walgren (West Hartford, Conn.) won at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2.
Springfield will next host Mount Holyoke at home on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 4 pm.

Toby Coffin G’01, enters his third year as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Springfield College. Coffin, who has coached at numerous high schools in the area, will look to build a program which will contend for a conference crown.
