Women's Lacrosse Drops First Game of the Season To Williams, 9-2

Ellie Getchell Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - March 12, 2013 - Despite jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, the Springfield College women's lacrosse team surrendered the next nine goals to lose for the first time this season to visiting Williams, 9-2, on a rainy Tuesday at Stagg Field.

Williams improves to 2-0, while the Pride drops to 4-1.

Both Michelle Dorsey and Connie Nielsen scored for the Pride, while Ellie Getchel had a standout game defensively, causing eight turnovers. Anne Versprille was tested all night between the pipes, making 14 stops for the home squad. The Pride struggled on its clears all night, going just 13-for-28, including just 5-for-14 in the second half.

Williams held a 33-12 advantage in shots, including an 18-3 cushion in the second stanza. Rebecca McGovern led all players with five points on two goals and three helpers. Nancy Palmer, Sam Weinstein, and Emily Whicker each scored twice, while Weinstein caused five turnovers and McGovern won four draws. Ali Piltch needed to make six saves to earn the win.

The Pride opened up a 2-0 lead, scoring a pair of goals by 11:43 thanks to a free-position goal from Nielsen and an unassisted strike from Dorsey.

However, Williams closed out the half scoring four unanswered goals to head into the break with a 4-2 advantage. Weinstein kick started the run, scoring after she caused a turnover on a Springfield clear at 17:32, before Palmer converted in the crease off a great look from McGovern at 14:19.

Goals from Whicker and Bridget Malicki, at 5:09 and 2:31, completed the first-half scoring as Williams was able to take advantage of the Pride converting just 8 of its 14 clear attempts.

McGovern continued Williams' scoring burst, netting a free-position goal just 1:06 into the second stanza. The Ephs put the game away for good with three goals in a 4:44 span as markers from Weinstein, McGovern, and Palmer put the visitors up 8-2 with 12:42 left in regulation. Whicker tacked on the game's final goal at 4:09.

Springfield will next play when it travels to Florida for Spring Break. The Pride will play Oswego on Sunday at 10:00 am before battling William Smith on Tuesday, March 19.
