Women's Lacrosse Shuts Down Keene State, 8-6

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - March 20, 2012 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse team put forth a strong defensive effort and Allie Davis poured in a hat trick to lead the Pride to a gritty 8-6 win over visiting Keene State on Tuesday evening in non-conference play on Stagg Field.

Springfield snapped its three-game skid to even its record to 3-3 this season. The loss drops the Owls to 2-2.

The Pride held Keene State to just 12 shots for the entire game and was especially effective on its ride, holding the Owls to just 9-for-23 on clears. Davis finished with a game-high three goals, while both Jackie Moscardelli and Meghan Flanagan produced two goals and an assist. Kerstin Lindrooth caused three turnovers and Britanny LeGuelaff snagged three draw controls and three ground balls. Anne Versprille took the win in goal, making four saves in the process.

For the Owls, Sammi Benson had a team-best three points off two goals and a helper, while Lauren Brown tacked on two markers. Erin Taylor played tremendous between the pipes, notching 12 saves and holding Springfield to just 2-of-7 on free-position shots.

To start the game, Moscardelli factored into both of Springfield’s two tallies, assisting on Kelly Gallo’s marker at 26:49 before stinging the corner at the 21:50 mark. The visiting Owls answered back with two goals in a 49 second span as Brown and Eliza Witherbee buried unassisted strikes to tie the game.

Flanagan’s goal 23 seconds later allowed Springfield to regain a 3-2 advantage. However, the lead was short live after Benson won the draw and raced past the Pride defense for a goal on the run to even things just 13 seconds later.

Springfield scored the final two goals of the half to head into the locker room with a 5-3 lead. Moscardelli scored her second of the game after finishing a great look from Flanagan before Davis converted a free-position strike for the Pride’s fifth goal of the half.

The Owls took control of the second half with two-straight goals thanks to Benson’s strong play to force Springfield into a timeout with 20:23 remaining in regulation. Benson started off the scoring after slicing through the Pride’s defense. She then found Caitlyn Corace along the crease to knot things at five-all.

Flangan found the back of the cage on a free-position attempt with 19:02 on the clock to put Springfield ahead for good. Davis bounced home a shot at the 10:18 mark to give the Pride a 7-5 lead, but the Owls wouldn't go away. Brown blasted home a free-position strike to make it a one-goal game with 9:15 left, only to have Davis seal the victory finishing on the run with just over four minutes left.

Springfield will open up New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday when it hosts Wheaton College at 12:00 pm.
