Springfield, Mass. -- November 19, 2012 -- For the second time in three weeks, Jonathan Marrero of Springfield College has been named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week in football.A freshman quarterback from Boston, Mass., Marrero led the Pride to a 31-8 victory over Alfred University last Saturday in the ECAC Division III Northeast Bowl at SC's Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. For his efforts, Marrero was named the Most Outstanding Player of the ECAC championship game.
Two weeks ago, Marrero had been named the Liberty League's Rookie of the Week during SC's 42-21 victory over RPI. Earlier in the season, he had been named the Liberty League's Offensive Performer of the Week in a 66-13 victory over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
Versus Alfred, Marrero ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns in 25 carries. His TD's were of one and six yards. He averaged 6.4 yards per carry. He also completed two passes in five attempts for an additional 29 yards.
Also last week, Marrero was named the Liberty League's Rookie of the Year.
Springfield finished the 2012 season with an 8-3 overall record. Marrero started the team's last seven games, the last five of which SC won. Marrero ran for 794 yards, second-best on the team, and 10 touchdowns. That was for an average of 5.6 yards per carry and a team-best 88.2 yards per game. He also completed 24 passes in 48 attempts for an even 50 percent, and for 533 yards and 10 more touchdowns. He averaged 59.2 yards per game through the air.
Marrero thus far, with just a few weeks remaining in the season, has led SC to a #2 in the nation ranking in Division III in passing efficiency. SC, behind Marrero's leadership, is currently ranked #2 in the nation in rushing offense.
Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 31st season as a head football coach in the fall of 2012. He enters his 29th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980. Read more.
