Merchant Marine Slips Past Men's Soccer, 1-0

Springfield, Mass. - September 1, 2012 - Despite holding an 18-9 advantage in shots, the Springfield College mens' soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon in the Western New England Soccer City Shootout.

Springfield will battle cross-town rival Western New England in the third-place game on Sunday at 12:00 pm. The Golden Bears lost to Eastern Connecticut, 3-0, in the other game in a tournament that featured four teams that appeared in the NCAA Division III Championship last year.

For Merchant Maine, Kyle Arestivo took a feed from Alex Maney for the game's lone goal in the 14th minute. 

Both Zach Dutter and Kevin Nowak had three shots in the game. Brett Bascom made two saves in goal. Besides holding an plus-nine advantage in shots, Springfield had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
