Women's Swimming & Diving Competes in Day 1 of NCAA Championship

Indianapolis, Ind. - March 19, 2014 - The Springfield College women's swimming & diving teams competed in day one of the 2014 NCAA Division III Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana on Wednesday.

Kellie Pennington (Monson, Mass.) lived up to her top seed in the 50 free in the preliminaries, winning the field of 46 swimmers with a time of 23.06, just .01 of her qualifying time of 23.05. Pennington will compete for the national championship in the finals of the 50 free on Wednesday night, getting underway at 6:00 p.m. The second place finisher in the preliminaries posted a time of 23.17.

Ashleigh Monroe (Southbury, Conn.) kicked things off for the Pride in the morning preliminary session, swimming in the opening event of the championship. The sophomore swam a time of 5:02.53 in the 500 free preliminaries to finish sixth in her heat. Monroe entered the event seeded 17th in the country. She finished 26th overall in a field of 41 swimmers.

Callie Phillips (East Longmeadow, Mass.) swam in the women's 200 IM, finishing third in her heat with a time of 2:06.94. The sophomore had a strong finish in the event, catching up to the leaders around the halfway mark, then just narrowly missing the top spot in her heat of eight swimmers. She finished 20th overall out of 44 competitors.

The 200 medley relay team of senior Kelsey Poole (Westfield, Mass.) and first-year's Emily Medeiros (Wakefield, Mass.), Christiana Greco (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Delaney Dyjak (Ludlow, Mass.) closed out the preliminary events for the women on day one. The team combined for a time of 1:47.34 to finish 20th overall.
