Bates Captures Its First NE Division III Indoor Men's Track & Field Title

Springfield, Mass. -- February 18, 2012 -- Bates College won its first ever New England Division III Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship this afternoon at the Springfield College Field House. The win snapped a streak of two consecutive wins by MIT. The meet was decided in the final event -- the 4x800 meter relay.

Bates scored 103 points to MIT's second-place finish of 95 points. The Bobcats needed to finish ahead of MIT by two places in that final event. Bates placed third, MIT eighth.

Overall, the final results included: Bates (103), MIT (95), Tufts (89), Williams (76), Bowdoin (71.5), Amherst (46), UMass Dartmouth (42.50), Middlebury (35.5), WPI (34.5), Springfield (31), Wesleyan (30), Westfield State (19), Colby and UMass-Boston (16), Coast Guard, Worcester State, and Fitchburg State (15), Southern Maine (9), Bridgewater State (6), Connecticut College and Trinity (4), Rhode Island College (3), Emmanuel (2), Brandeis (1).

For the wining Bates team, finishing first in the day's events included junior James LePage in the 800 with a time of 1:55.77, and junior David Pless in the shot put with a toss of 17.16 meters.

Several records were broken during the day. Dominique Kone of Colby broke the SC Field House record and the Meet record with a sprint of 6.85 seconds in the 60 meters. Ben Scheetz of Amherst broke the Field House record in the 1000 with a time of 2:28.93. Coby Horowitz of Bowdoin set a new Field House mark in the mile run at 4:13.05. Michael Schmidt of Middlebury established an SC Field House record in the 3000 with a time of 8:25.32.

In the shot put, Bates' David Pless broke his own facility record with a toss of 17.16 meters. Another field house record was broken by MIT's Chinedum Umachi in the weight throw at 19.39 meters.

Another Field House mark was set by Adam Scalese of Coast Guard in 8.32 seconds in the 60-high hurdles. In the 4x800 relay, Bowdoin set a field house record with a time of 7:50.59. That was set by James Boeding, Colin Ogilvie, Colin Fong, and Matthew Hillard. In the men's distance medley relay Bowdoin set another facility record with a time of 10:18.80. That foursome included Alex Williams, Malik Mckight, Isaac May, and Coby Horowitz.

Winning the heptathlon was Chris Fogler of Williams with 4433 points. He won it over second-place finisher David Hardison of Bates with 4403 points.

For the homestanding Springfield College Pride, senior Kevin Coyle won a pair of events -- the long jump in 7.13 meters, and the triple jump in 14.55 meters. He is the defending national champion in the long jump.

SC senior Brian Fuller placed second in the 3000 with a time of 8:28.80. SC junior Ryan O'Connell placed 10th in the mile run with a time of 4:19.74. Sophomore William Ferguson placed in a tie for 12th in the high jump at 1.84 meters.
