Springfield, Mass. - April 9, 2014 - A base-clearing double from Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) in the fourth inning proved to be the difference as the Springfield College baseball team earned a 4-2 win over visiting Roger Williams on Wednesday on Berry-Allen Field.
Springfield improves to 9-9 with the win while Roger Williams falls to 16-9 with the loss.
Alex Williams (East Hartford, Conn.) earned his first win of the season (1-1) on the mound for the Pride, going 5.1 innings, allowing six hits, two runs while striking out one. Peter Baranski (Hamden, Conn.) pitched a flawless ninth inning for the Pride to earn the save, his second of the year. A combination of Baranski, Dan Green (Oakland, N.J.) and Matt Butrym (Schenectady, N.Y.) pitched 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit over that span.
Tyler Campo (Wrentham, Mass.) (0-2) took the loss, going 3.2 innings, allowing two hits, four runs, two earned with five walks and two strikeouts. The Hawks used four different pitchers in relief.
In the top of the first inning, Williams retired the Hawks in order and got some help from his offense that posted one run in the bottom half of the inning. Starr led off the inning with a single up the middle. Billy Peterson (Wareham, Mass.) took a walk and Sean Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) moved both runners with a sacrifice bunt down the third base line. CJ Monroe (Wolcott, Conn.) took a walk to load the bases and with two outs in the inning, Starr scored on a wild pitch by Campo.
Williams allowed just one hit in the second, but got out of a jam with a double play to end the inning. Campo got back on track in the bottom of the second, retiring Springfield in order.
In the third, Williams had another 1-2-3 inning as Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) led off for Roger Williams, but was thrown out by left fielder Billy Paskowski (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) at second base trying to stretch a single. Williams got the next two batters to ground out to get out of the third. Campo matched Williams in the bottom half of the inning with his second-straight 1-2-3 inning.
Roger Williams had the bases loaded with one out in the fourth and Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) delivered the tying run with a single through the right side, scoring Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.) for a 1-1 game. The Hawks took a 2-1 lead when Baker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.).
Springfield had a big fourth inning, fueled by Starr, who delivered a base-clearing double to deep right center, driving in three runs for a 4-2 lead. Paskowski, Jared Hopkins (Cranston, R.I.) and Dan Bergami (Schenectady, N.Y.) all scored on the hit, which would prove to be the game-winner.
Starr led the Pride at the plate, going 2-for-5 with one run scored and three batted in. Smith and Monroe each tallied a hit for Springfield.
Nelson had a big day at the plate for Roger Williams, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
