Springfield, Mass. – September 4, 2010 – The Springfield College men’s soccer team netted four goals in the second half as it topped visiting Johnson and Wales, 4-1, in the opening game of the Springfield College Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex.

It was the season-opener for both teams as Springfield improves to 1-0, and the Wildcats fall to 0-1.

Johnson and Wales had the best chance of the opening 45 minutes after a breakdown in the Springfield defensive unit. After an errant pass in the defensive third, Jean St. Fluer found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Chris Walton with just over five minutes remaining. St. Fluer’s bid from 18 yards out beat Walton but found the left post as the game remained scoreless.

Eric Stalsburg put the Pride on top in the 53rd minute as he tallied his first goal of the season. Jae Tracey slipped a pass through the box, which Stalsburg ran onto and slotted home into the right corner to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Freshman Ryan Malone made the most of his collegiate debut as he netted the eventual game-winner on a spectacular goal in the 62nd minute. Malone let loose a left-footed strike from 25 yards out that bent into the upper right-hand corner.

Springfield’s lead grew to three after a Johnson and Wales own goal at the 74:41 mark. The Wildcats cut the lead to two just 38 seconds later as they took advantage of a scramble in front of the net. After an initial shot by Ben Bellows was blocked, Tyler Gates headed home the loose bouncing ball, which the linesman ruled had crossed the goal line.

The Pride’s fourth and final goal of the afternoon came on another own goal by JWU.

Springfield held a 17-7 advantage in the shot department, and a 4-5 edge in corner kicks. Chris Walton earned the win between the pipes as he needed to make just two saves. Joe Ferraro was credited with the loss as he made six saves.

Springfield returns to action on Sunday afternoon when it hosts local-foe Westfield State at 12:00 pm.

In the second game of the afternoon, the Westfield State men’s soccer team broke open a 1-1 tie in the second half en route to a 3-1 victory over Thomas College in the Springfield College Invitational.

Josh Severns led the way for the Owls as he tallied a goal and an assist in the victory, as Westfield State improved to 1-0 on the season. The Terriers dropped to 0-1.

Severns netted the first goal of the contest in the 31st minute of the game. The junior striker broke free inside the 18 yard box and blasted a shot into the right corner of the net as Westfield grabbed a 1-0 lead.

Just under six minutes later, the Terriers evened the contest thanks in part to a terrific individual effort by Casey Castle. Castle shook a pair of Owl defenders inside the box after a couple of moves and slipped home the tying goal into the right corner.

Severns had his hand on the Owls second goal of the game as he delivered a perfect centering pass to teammate Tim Parsons. Severns took the ball up the right flank and found Parsons inside the 18 yard box. Parsons took the pass and pounded home Westfield State’s second goal of the afternoon at the 57:07 mark.

The Owls tacked on their third goal in the 82nd minute as Kyle Yelin slammed home a cross from Justin Laliberte from inside the six yard box.
