New London, Conn - March 28, 2009 - The Springfield College women's track and field team started the 2009 outdoor season in impressive fashion as it captured the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Pride won with a 195 points, followed by Westfield State's score of 128. Coast Guard rounded out the meet with 68 points.
Nikki Hay was tremendous in the outdoor opener as she won four individual events on the day. Hay took first in the 100 meters (12.30), 200 meters (25.42), long jump (18-04.50), and triple jump (36-05.50). Hay also anchored the 4x100 relay team of Cherelle Allen, Erika Marks, and Nicole Reynolds that finished first in 49.72.
Springfield also had the top four finishers in the 800 meter race, led by Lacey Cartier's winning time of 2:25.58. Cartier also went on to win the 1500 in 4:58.73.
In the high jump, Kayla Robertson scored first place points with a winning jump of 5-03.00. Springfield also had the finisher in the pole vault as Kathryn Schumann reached a height of 8-09.00.
Springfield also had two winners in the throwing events as Fatima Rose won the shot with a toss of 38-02.25 and Kelsey Bishop won the hammer with a distance of 159-11.
