Springfield, Mass. -- September 17, 2012 -- Halfback Mike Davis of the Springfield College football team has been named this week's Liberty League Co-Offensive Performer of the Week as well as the ECAC Division III Northwest Offensive Player of the Week. A senior from Madison, Conn., Davis led the Pride to a 49-42 victory over Mount Ida last Saturday afternoon at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field by scoring four touchdowns and rushing for 184 yards. His TD runs were of 62, 19, 52, and 13 yards.
But more than the sheer volume, it was the timing of his touchdowns that made the difference for the home team. Three of Davis' touchdowns were scored within a span of six minutes and one second late in the third quarter and early in the fourth. They were the last three scores of the contest, and brought SC back from a 42-28 deficit to the 49-42 victory.
Davis' 62-yard romp was down the left sideline, giving SC a 21-14 lead in the second-quarter. His other three TDs were of a similar nature, especially his 52-yarder in which he tight-roped down the line and avoided teetering out of bounds.
Davis now has six touchdowns after three games, three more than all of last year, and is averaging 109.0 yards per game (39th in the nation in Division III). He is also averaging a remarkable 15.6 yards per carry. His 327 yards rushing leads the team thus far.
He is also helping Springfield rank second nationally in rushing offense with 361.00 yards per game as a team.
Earlier today, Davis was named Springfield College's Male Maroon Athlete of the Week.
