North Dartmouth, Mass. - September 18, 2010 - Led by Ryan O'Connell's 16th place finish, the Springfield College men's cross country team finished fifth out of 35 teams at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The Pride finished just ahead of host UMass-Dartmouth, with Springfield’s 198 points edging out the Corsairs’ 199 for a top-5 finish. O’Connell was Springfield’s top finisher in 16th place, the only Pride runner to crack the top-20.
O’Connell, a Middleboro, Mass. native, finished the 8K course in 25:09.53. Springfield’s other top-30 finishers were sophomore Zach Pietras (Ludlow, Mass.) in 25th with a time of 25:26.98. Sophomore Anthony Salvucci (Burlington, Mass.) also had a solid race as he crossed the finish line in 26th at 25:28.77.
Keene State took home the title with 73 points and had three top-eight finishers, including the top two runners. MIT (76 points), Brandeis (79), and UMass-Lowell (150) rounded out the top four in front of Springfield.
Others who scored for Springfield were sophomore Matt Scully (Watertown, Conn.) in 53rd with a time of 26:08.28 and junior Russell Johnson (Hooksett, N.H.) with a time of 26:55.54.
Next Saturday the Pride head to Williamstown for the Purple Valley Classic at 12:00 pm.
