Houston, Texas - March 20, 2013 - Both Kellie Pennington and Jennifer Thompson earned All-America honors in the opening day of the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships. Pennington finished as the national runner-up in the 50 free, while Thompson placed fifth on the three-meter board.
As a team, Springfield is currently in ninth place after totaling 31 points.
Last year's national champion in the 50 free, Pennington swam a time of of 23.07 to finish second tonight. The Monson, Mass. native entered the competition as the third-seed with a 23.39, and qualified for the finals after posting the second fastest time of the prelims with a 23.18.
On the three-meter, Thompson finished fifth after registering a 470.75. Improving on her ninth-place finish from a season ago, the Cheshire, Conn. product tallied a 468.05 in the prelims en route to competing in the championship finals.
Also competing individually was Callie Phillips, who raced in the 200 IM. In her first race on the national level, Phillips posted a time of 2:08.58 to place 27th out of 37 competitors.
The Pride's 200 medley relay team of Pennington, Phillips, Kelsey Poole and Amanda Shaw also swam on Wednesday, but were disqualified in the prelims.
