Springfield, Mass. - March 1, 201 - Springfield College junior Jen Thompson won the NCAA Division III Regional Diving Championship on the one-meter board Friday evening to automatically qualify to compete at the upcoming NCAA Championships.
Thompson, who was crowned the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Diver of the Year several weeks ago, topped the field with a score of 470.30 to claim the title. Thompson is the lone automatic qualifier on the night, while the top five finishers on the one-meter board have unofficially qualified for the NCAA's. Final determinations on who will officially qualify will not be determined until Saturday afternoon, following the completion of the three-meter event.
Mckenzie Murdoch of Williams placed second (467.10), while WPI's Veronica Nikolaki took third (437.90). Jenika Parson from Smith placed fourth (426.05) and Michelle Higgins of Williams rounded out the top five (424.30).
Nine total women's divers will advance from this regional to compete in the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in Shenandoah, Texas on March 20-23.
The competition will continue on Saturday when the women's three-meter competition begins at 12:00 pm.
