William Smith Rallies Past Women's Lacrosse, 10-8

Orlando, Fla. - March 19, 2013 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse team let a 6-3 second-half lead slip away as it lost to William Smith, 10-8, on Tuesday morning in the final game of its Spring Break trip.

William Smith improved to 2-3 win the win, while the Pride lost for just the second time this season to drop to 5-2.

Connie Nielsen, who has scored a goal in all seven games to start her collegiate career, poured in a season-best five goals in the loss. Meghan Flanagan tallied a game-high six draw controls and scored twice for the Pride, while Anne Versprille finished the morning with nine saves.

After the Pride fell behind 1-0 just 1:22 into the contest, Nielsen connected on consecutive unassisted strikes to give Springfield a 2-1 lead. The Herons evened things up just 55 seconds later on Abbie West's second goal of the early going, only to have Kelly Gallo answer off a feed from Colleen Keeley with 15:08 on the clock.

William Smith tied the game for the final time in the first half on a Katie Dexter goal at the 18:32 mark before goals from Nielsen and Flanagan gave Springfield a 5-3 lead the half.

Nielsen scored for the fourth time in the game 1:51 into the second half as Springfield opened up its largest lead of the game at 6-3. From that point on, William Smith took over the contest, outscoring the Pride 7-2 down the stretch to race away with the victory.

Katie Sipple and Geneva Falder brought the Herons within 6-5 at the 5:15 mark, before Nielsen's last goal of the game gave Springfield some breathing room at 7-5, with less than 20 minutes to play.

William Smith then responded with five-straight goals, including three in a 1:35 span, to seize control of the game. Flanagan added the game's final goal with 1:52 to play as the Pride could not muster a late rally.

The Pride will play its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Sunday afternoon when it travels to Mount Holyoke for a 12:00 pm contest.
