Women's Swimming and Diving Slips Into Second Place at NEWMAC Championships

South Hadley, Mass. - February 19, 2011 - The Springfield College women's swimming and diving team slipped into second place after day two of the 2011 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championship at Mount Holyoke College. After seven more events on Saturday, MIT overtook 10-time reigning champion Pride as the Engineers prevailed in five events to increase their point total to 614.5. Springfield remains in striking distance with 577.5 points. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard Academy rounds out the top three with 309 points.

Springfield’s Kerry Lynch, Janella Cuyler, Kaitlin Reilly and Kellie Pennington completed the 200 medley relay race in 1:46.69 to secure second place, which provisionally qualified them for the NCAA Division III National Championships.

In the 400 IM, Meredith Trumbull swam a 4:39.18 to place third, while teammate Anna Woodward took eighth in 4:48.46.

Pennington notched her third victory of the weekend with her school record time 56.54 in the 100-yard butterfly. She was followed by Reilly (57.91), as both hit the NCAA “B” cut with their times. Kelsey Poole swam a 1:00.23 to place seventh for Springfield.

Aimee Doe took third in the 200 free (1:54.70), while Caroline Kosciusko took fifth (1:56.17), and Jaclyn Van Waalwijk (1:58.10) placed eighth.

Springfield landed three more in the top eight of the 100 breast, with Nicole Stracqualursi leading the charge with a fourth-place split of 1:08.05, out-touching Cuyler with swam a 1:08.06. Woodward also placed eighth for Springfield with a time of 1:09.34.

In the 100 back, Lynch touched in 59.82 to finish fourth, while Pennington, Doe, Reilly, and Kosciusko met the NCAA "B" standard in the 800 free relay in 7:39.98. Pennington's leadoff split of 1:52.59 also established a new pool and school record.
