Baseball Rallies Past UMass Dartmouth, 10-8, In Resumed Game

Steve Starr Box Score

Winter Haven, Fla. - March 19, 2014 - The Springfield College baseball team rallied for a 10-8 victory over UMass Dartmouth in a resumed game after the initial contest was suspended after six innings on Monday due to inclement weather.

Springfield had trailed the Corsairs, 7-4, after six innings of play but managed to plate six runs on Wednesday morning to complete the comeback win.

On Monday, the Pride jumped all over the Corsairs to begin the game, plating four runs in the second inning. With runners on second and third, Anthony Faggiana (Woodbridge, Conn.) ripped a single to right center drive in a pair of runs in his first collegiate at bat. Shane O'Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.) followed with a base knock of his own, and Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) made it a 4-0 ball game with two-run single.

UMass Dartmouth answered with five runs over the next two innings, including four in the fourth. Ryan Medeiros provided the key hit in the fourth, pounding a bases clearing double to put UMass Dartmouth ahead, 5-4.

In the sixth, the Corsairs benefited from an error and wild pitch by Springfield to score two more runs before lightning and a tornado watch advisory halted the contest.

Alex Williams (E. Hartford, Conn.) lasted four innings on the mound for the Pride, scattering seven hits and allowing four earned runs while striking out three.

Matt Butrym (Schenectady, N.Y.) a first-year transfer earned the win on the mound for Springfield, pitching the final three innings on Wednesday. He gave up just one run.

Brent Poulin (Atascadero, Calif.) finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two batted in. Sean Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) went 2-for-2 with one run scored and two RBIs while Starr and Faggiana each drove two runs in.
