O'Connell and Hammerstrom Lead Men's Track in Opening Spring Meet

New London, Conn.. - March 29, 2014 - The Springfield College men's track & field team opened the spring season on Saturday in the 2014 Coast Guard Spring Invitational, finishing seventh overall in the team standings.

Ryan O'Connell (Middleboro, Mass.) and Brandon Hammerstrom (Auburn, N.H.) were the Pride's top finishers each placing second overall in their respective events. O'Connell finished the 5,000 meter run in 15:43:80, while Hammerstrom took second in the shot put with a distance of 42-10.25.

The Pride had three top-ten finishers in the 100m, led by Ken Toal (Newtown, Conn.) who took third with a time of 11.29. Jacob Buhelt (Falmouth, Maine) and Victor Ekpenyong finished ninth (11.57) and tenth (11.58), respectively.

Springfield's 4x100 relay team took second overall with a time of 44.18.

Nick Salvucci (Burlington, Mass.) earned a sixth place finish in the high jump with a height of 5-8 while Andrew Aronne (Wethersfield, Conn.) led the Pride in the pole vault with an eighth place finish (12-1.50). In the hammer throw, P.J. Andrews (Lincoln, R.I.) took fourth with a distance of 149-03.

Springfield finished 7th overall out of 12 teams with 39 points. WPI won the invitational with 147.50 points, Westfield State (134) finished second, Coast Guard took third with 107 points, Holy Cross took home fourth place with 65 points while Rhode Island College (45.50) took home fifth place and Easter Connecticut State (40.50) finished sixth.
