New Haven, Conn. - May 14, 2011 -- Several athletes from Springfield College competed in the All-New England Track & Field Championships at Southern Connecticut State College this past weekend. Kelly Curtis had the Pride's top effort by placing fourth in the javelin.
In this competition, all three divisions -- I, II, and III -- participated as one. The University of New Hampshire captured first as a team with 95 points. UNH was followed by Northeastern (92). host Southern Connecticut (81), Vermont (65), Sacred Heart (62), Holy Cross (45), MIT (41.33), Williams (41), UMass (39), and Tufts (36.33). Springfield finished tied for 20th (with Boston College and Wheaton) of 32 scoring teams with 10 points.
Curtis finished with a throw of 137-feet, 5-inches or 41.89 meters in the javelin. Placing not too far behind was Colleen Brague in seventh with a toss of 125-feet, 4-inches or 38.21 meters. Those two combined for seven of SC's 10 points in that one event.
Elsewhere, Curtis also competed in the long jump, finishing ninth with a leap of 17-feet, 7-inches or 5.36 meters. A ninth-place finish is just one place shy of scoring any team points. Curtis also placed 20th in the high jump by leaping 5-feet, 1-inch.
In addition, SC had three relay teams competing. The Pride's other three team points resulted in a sixth-place finish in the 4x100 meter relay as Crystal Davis, Kelly Murphy, Erika Marks, and Laurie Jenkins ran their best time of the year, meeting NCAA Provisional standards with a 48.60.
In the 4x400 meter relay, Joy Jennifer, Katie Schumann, Murphy, and Gabriella Gaudreault placed ninth with a time of 3:55.09, also reaching NCAA Provisional standards. In the 4x800 meter relay, Nicole DeChristoforo, Michelle Mirti, Elise White, and Jen Kapinos took 10th with a clocking of 9:35.61.
