Nashua, N.H. - February 23, 2013 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team continued to roll through in-region competition as it swept both host Daniel Webster and Southern Vermont in a tri-match Saturday at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.
The Pride improved to 12-3 overall, while the host Eagles moved to 6-5 overall, and Southern Vermont dropped to 5-7.
Against Southern Vermont, Evan Acanfora notched a match-best 15 kills and Brendan McGourn added 13 and hit .409 as the Pride earned set victories of 25-20, 25-21, 25-21.
John Coen added 10 kills and Eric Johnson dished out 38 assists for the winners while Ryan Lilley added a team-high six digs. Mike Freytag chipped in with eight kills and four solo blocks.
Anthony Barahona again led SVC with nine kills along with three aces and four digs, while Joey Dighton notched seven kills. Herson Canta notched 16 assists with three kills.
Springfield hit .410 overall while SVC hit .178. The Pride finished with 48 kills to 29 from the Mountaineers.
Facing the first top-ranked team or defending national champion in any sport in DWC athletics history, the Eagles were overmatched by Springfield’s height as the Pride prevailed with set scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-20.
Alistair Matthews led Springfield with 11 kills and hit .556 with one error in 18 attempts and Greg Falcone was nearly perfect with 10 kills and no errors in 12 attempts to hit .833. Falcone would add five total blocks including three solos.
Mike Becker racked up 35 assists, while Mike Pelletier chipped in with nine kills and Luis Vega added eight. Charlie Hendrix led the Eagles with 19 kills while Joe Walz added five and Jose Vargas had four. Frias finished with 27 assists.
Springfield hit a remarkable .514 edging DWC in total kills (41-39) and added a decisive advantage in total blocks (9-1).
