Springfield, Mass. - September 29, 2009 - The Springfield College women's soccer team netted three goals in the second half en route to a 4-0 victory over visiting Rhode Island College in a non-conference contest Tuesday evening on Brock-Affleck Field at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex.
With the victory, Springfield, which is ranked 25th in the country in the latest NSCAA poll, now stands at 6-2-1 on the year, while the Anchorwomen drop to 1-6.
The Pride controlled the momentum for most of the first half and was able to break into the scoring column on a goal by freshman Mary Hogan in the 39th minute. After a corner kick from Springfield's Sue Silva, a scramble for the ball in front of the RIC goal ensued. Hogan found a way to slip through the defense and put the ball in the back of the net to score the lone goal of the opening 45 minutes.
Springfield’s second goal came just sixteen seconds into the second half when sophomore Katie Mantie ripped the ball just outside the eighteen yard box into the upper corner of the goal.
The Pride, which outshot the visitors, 29-4 in the game, continued to pour on the offensive pressure for the rest of the half. In the 76th minute, Hogan scored her second goal of the evening after she took a shot inside the eighteen yard box that found the back of the net. Brittany Collins scored the final goal of the contest in the 85th minute after she got free from several defenders thanks in part to a feed from teammate Amber Thornton.
Katie Delude made a pair of saves before being spelled by Erin Greenstein for the final 14-plus minutes as the duo combined for the shutout. Maddie Pirri finished with 11 saves for the visitors in the loss.
The Pride will return to action on Saturday afternoon when it welcomes MIT to campus for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Kick off is slated for 1:00 pm
