Wrestlers Compete at NEWA Futures

Mark Pinto Bristol, R.I. – February 24, 2014 – Standout performances from sophomore Mark Pinto (Milford, Mass.) and freshman David Varian (Yorktown, N.Y.) proved to be instrumental for the Springfield College wrestling program at the New England Wrestlers Association Futures meet on Sunday afternoon, hosted at Roger Williams University.

Pinto defeated Jason Bowen and Robert Galligani of Roger Williams University en route to a victory in the 141 weight class. However, the highlight of the day came in the 285 bracket. After defeating Alex Colon of Johnson and Wales University and Steve Maldonado of Norwich University, the freshman drew a familiar face in the championship match. Rufus Arraheffege (Malden, Mass.) outlasted Jonah Aurelio of Johnson and Wales and Jake Kruger of Roger Williams to solidify his spot against Varian for the grand finale. Varian defeated Arraheffege 4-3 to crown himself the 285 weight class champion.

Other notable performances included a third-place finish for freshman Zach Joseph (Clifton Park, N.Y.) in the 149 weight class. Joseph defeated Thomas Canta of Roger Williams before falling to Zach Larabee of Wesleyan. After getting sent to the loser’s bracket, Joseph rallied to beat Robert Rosenberg of Wesleyan, Ben Swanson of Norwich and Matt Jones of Roger Williams to take third.

After losing to Alec Golner of Roger Williams, James Gendler (Avon, Conn.) defeated Wes Betts of Norwich and Ryan Butler and Cory Case of Roger Williams before losing to Golner in the third-place match.
