Men's Volleyball Hits .627 In Sweep of Southern Vermont

Springfield, Mass. - March 30, 2013 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team finished with a .627 hitting percentage in a three-game sweep of Southern Vermont on Saturday afternoon in Blake Arena. The Pride won by the set scores of 25-16, 25-11, 25-9.

The loss drops Southern Vermont to 8-16 on the year while the Pride won its 16th-consecutive match to improve to 23-3.

18 different players saw action on the court in the win as Springfield totaled 41 kills on 59 swings, committing just four attack errors. Mike Pelletier finished with a match-best 11 kills at a .733 clip, while Greg Falcone recorded kills on all six of his swings. Nick Ferry totaled eight digs, and Mike Becker tallied a match-best five blocks.

Southern Vermont was held to a .000 hitting percentage in the match, as Springfield held a 9.0 to 0.0 advantage in blocks and a 8-0 edge in service aces. Anthony Barahona led the Mountaineers with nine kills and Herson Canta was credited with 17 assists and three digs. Caleb Odom also added fix kills.

John Coen converted on the right side to give Springfield an early 10-5 advantage in the opening set, as the Mountaineers burned their first timeout of the match. Springfield's offense had its way from the onset, totaling a .591 attack percentage. Luis Vega soared to hammer a cross court kill, his fourth in the early going, to finish the set, 25-16, in favor of the hosts.

Springfield had a strong start to the second set as well, racing out to an 8-2 lead after consecutive Southern Vermont attack errors. The Pride continued to roll, posting a .647 hitting percentage for the game as it won 25-11.

In the third, head coach Charlie Sullivan substituted liberally, and the Pride's reserves performed at a high level. Hitting .650 in the set as a team, Evan Acanfora connected on four kills and Keaton Pieper handed out seven assists to compete the sweep.

Springfield will play again on Wednesday when it travels to take on Stevens in a clash of two of the top five ranked teams in the nation.
