Women's Lacrosse Surges Past Wellesley, 17-10

Wellesley, Mass. - April 7, 2012 - The Springfield College lacrosse team outscored host Wellesley College, 10-3 in the second half, en route to a 17-10 victory over the Blue in NEWMAC action on Saturday morning.

The Pride broke open a 7-7 game, earning its second NEWMAC victory of the season, improving to 6-6 overall (2-1 NEWMAC). Wellesley suffers its first NEWMAC loss, dipping to 3-8 (1-1 NEWMAC).

The Blue took a 5-2 advantage midway through the first half, backed by two scores from Meredith Roy. Springfield battled back, going on a 4-1 scoring run, knotting the game at 6-6, as Jackie Moscardelli added two goals for the Pride. The teams then traded scores, with Roy and Moscardelli each adding their third goals of the game, setting the halftime score to 7-7.

Springfield's Allie Davis and Wellesley's Allison Robbins each added goals in the opening minutes of the second half increasing the score to 8-8. The Pride then added back-to-back goals from Michelle Dorsey and Davis taking a 10-8 lead before Nathalie Gruet made it 10-9 with a Blue goal at 21:21.

From that point on it was all Springfield, as the Pride closed out the game on a 7-1 run. Moscardelli scored twice down the stretch for the visitors, who closed out the 17-10 victory.

Springfield outshot Wellesley, 30-22, but Blue keeper Tya Logan kept things close with 10 saves, including six in the first half. Her Springfield counterpart, Anne Versprille, picked up six total saves.

Moscardelli led all scorers with five goals for the Pride. Kelly Gallo recorded three goals and an assist, while Dorsey scored three times. Rounding out the Springfield offense, Meghan Flanagan recorded three points on two goals and an assist, while Davis scored twice.

Also for Springfield, Jennifer Thomas led the way with four draw controls as the Pride edged Wellesley 17-12 in the category. Moscardelli caused three turnovers to lead the defense, while also adding three ground balls.

Wellesley was paced by four goals and an assist from Robbins and three goals and a helper from Roy. Gruet added a goal and an assist, while Meaghan Fuchs and Brit Mscisz added solo scores. Robbins and Roy also added three draw controls each, with Robbins also picking up two caused turnovers.

Springfield next plays on Wednesday, hosting Trinity at 5:00pm.
