Army Edges Men's Gymnastics, 414.600 to 413.100

James Hennin Springfield, Mass. -- March 17, 2013 -- Despite the host producing its top score of the season to date, it was the West Point Academy men's gymnastics team which came through with a win over Springfield College, 414.600 to 413.100, this afternoon in a dual-meet at SC's Blake Arena.

The Pride would say its good-byes and thank you to seven seniors on Senior Day. They included Devonta Brown (Marlboro, Mass.), co-captain Joe Carlson (Naugatuck, Conn.), Chris Jost (Ashland, Mass.), Kevin Miner (Canton, Conn.), Jimmy Pezzino (Buffalo, N.Y.), co-captain Rich Ruggiero (Northford, Conn.), and Jeff White (Douglas, Mass.).

SC's previous top score of the year was 404.000 at the New England Intercollegiate Invitational Championships held at Blake Arena on February 17.

Only two competitors, both from Army, completed the all-around -- and they were junior Kip Webber (Boxborough, Mass.) with a score of 84.000, and freshman Chris Short (Vancouver, Wash.) with a score of 80.500.

Webber had an excellent day finishing first on the floor exercise (15.000) and first in the still rings (15.100, the top score of the afternoon). He also placed second on the parallel bars (14.500), and third on the high bar (13.600).

Also coming through with a first-place finish for the visitors was senior Nicholas Fettinger (Hemlock, Mich.) with a 14.700 in the parallel bars.

For Springfield, placing first were sophomore Pat Ryther (Boston, Mass.) in the pommel horse with a 14.800, Jost in the vault with a 14.600, and junior James Hennin (Auckland, New Zealand) in the high bar with a 14.600.

Once again, it was five competitors each in each event, five scores counting.

Springfield will get back into action on Friday-Saturday, March 29-30 at the USAG National Championships at William & Mary. It will then host the ECAC Championships on Friday-Saturday, April 5-6 right back here at Blake Arena.
