



West Point, N.Y. -- January 15, 2011 -- The Springfield College men's gymnastics team opened its 2011 season by placing fifth of six teams at the West Point Open Friday night. Then on Saturday among individual competitors, Ty Evans had a third and a fourth, while Rich Ruggiero took a second in the pommel horse. As a team, SC placed fifth. Penn State, ranked 7th nationally, finished first with a team score of 347.0. In second through sixth were #11-ranked Temple (328.3), #15-ranked Army (320.0), Navy (319.6), Springfield (318.9), and Brockport (263.6).
On Saturday, the individual competition took place, and SC had six place-finishers. The top finisher for the Pride was Rich Ruggiero with a score of 13.25 in the pommel horse. That allowed him to place second in that event.
Also doing well was Ty Evans, who had a score of 15.45 in the vault, good for a third-place finish. Evans also had a 12.7 in the pommel horse, good for a fourth.
Other top scorers from SC included Josh Fox with an eighth-place finish in the floor exercise (12.55). Ryan Ponce finished seventh in the still rings with a 13.25. And Garret DeSantis finished eighth in the horizontal bar at 12.5.
Up next, the men will travel to Navy for the Navy Open on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 3 pm.
