



Bridgewater, Mass. -- January 23, 2011 -- The Springfield College wrestling team won two of three matches in the New England Wrestling Association Team Dual Tournament today at Bridgewater State University. The Pride was the No. 1 seed, but was upset by No. 5-seeded Plymouth State, 24-16, in third-round competition, but then defeated No. 3-seeded Williams, 21-19, to finish third. No. 2-seeded Wesleyan defeated Plymouth State, 24-12, to capture the title. Springfield received a first-round bye, as did No. 2-seeded Wesleyan. The remaining matches in the first-round nearly went according to form. No. 3-seeded Williams defeated No. 14-seeded Norwich, 44-0. No. 4-seeded Johnson & Wales defeated No. 13-seeded WPI, 31-15. No. 5-seeded Plymouth State defeated #12-seeded Trinity, 24-15. No. 6-seeded Bridgewater State defeated No. 11-seeded WNEC, 34-3. No. 10-seeded Coast Guard, in the lone upset, defeated No. 7-seeded Roger Williams, 23-21. And No. 8-seeded Rhode Island College defeated No. 9-seeded Southern Maine, 33-15.
In the second round, Springfield defeated RIC, 22-16. Wesleyan took down Coast Guard, 37-6. Williams edged Bridgewater State, 21-19. Plymouth State defeated Johnson & Wales, 20-18, in a minor upset. Norwich beat WNEC, 28-15. And Trinity defeated WPI, 25-24.
In the third round, it was Plymouth State coming up with its second straight upset, this one over Springfield, 24-16. Wesleyan defeated Williams, 28-8. Thus, Wesleyan will meet Plymouth State for the NEWA Dual title.
In one fifth-place semifinal match, RIC defeated Johnson & Wales, 24-12. In the other fifth-place semi, it was Bridgewater State 28, Coast Guard 15. In other consolation matches, it was Trinity 29, Southern Maine 12; and Roger Williams 34, Norwich 6.
In the 13th-place match, it was WPI 29, WNEC 16.
In the fourth and final round, it was Wesleyan defeating Plymouth State, 24-12, to win the Duals. In the third-place match, Springfield defeated Williams, 21-19. SC had beaten Williams, 19-15, in Williamstown last Wednesday. In the fifth-place match, RIC defeated Bridgewater State, 30-13. In the seventh-place match, JWU defeated Coast Guard, 30-21. For ninth place, Roger Williams took down Trinity, 27-15. Finally, in the 11th-place match, Southern Maine defeated Norwich, 31-18.
