Norton, Mass. - April 4, 2012 - The Springfield College men's tennis team picked up a key league-win today at Wheaton College, 5-4, at Clark Tennis Courts in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
The win moves the Pride to 5-8 (1-1 NEWMAC) while the Lyons fall to .500 at 3-3 (0-2 NEWMAC). Springfield picked up two doubles points, as Kyle Mersereau and Ben Burnap scored an 8-5 win over Neall Oliver and Ned Terrace at No. 1 doubles while Zach O'Leary and Joe Giannelli posted an 8-0 shutout at No. 3 doubles over William Beaton and classmate Kyle Kiernan.
In singles action , Burnap defeated sophomore Terrace 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles while Giannelli tripped up Beaton at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
With the Lyons holding a 4-3 lead late in the match, junior Jesse Boyd earned the fifth and decisive point at No. 5 singles, where he defeated freshman Lawrence Chan . After dropping the first set 6-1, Boyd rallied back to win the second set 6-3 before disposing of Chan with a 6-1 win in the third and decisive set.
The Pride host Coast Guard Saturday at 1 p.m.
