Women's Track Wins Jerry Gravel Classic

Gabriella Gaudreault Westfield, Mass. – March 24, 2012 - The Springfield College women’s track and field team opened the outdoor season with a win at the Jerry Gravel Classic Saturday. The Pride dominated the field with 139.5 points to cruise to the victory.

American International finished in second place with 112 points, Wesleyan took third (106.5), Utica placed fourth (83), and the hosts Westfield State (69.5) rounded out the top five.

Kelly Curtis and Amanda Martin contributed consistently throughout the meet. Curtis won both the 100 meter hurdles and the high jump. Her time of 15.46 seconds in the 100 hurdles was more than six tenths of a second faster than the runner up, and her leap of 1.55 meters earned her the victory in the high jump. The senior standout also earned points as the runner-up in the javelin throw. Curtis’ toss of 38.25 meters was second only to teammate Colleen Brague, who measured in at 39.08 meters. Brague added a sixth place finish in the hammer throw at 38.45 meters.

Martin did her damage in the jumping events. She finished first in the triple jump with a distance of 10.87 meters and came in second in the long jump by less than two inches with a leap of 4.99 meters.

Others that performed well for the Pride included Laurie Jenkins in the 100 meter dash, Crystal Davis in the 400 meter event, and Jenn Kapinos and Gabriella Gaudreault in the 800. Jenkins ran a solid time of 12.69 seconds for second place, Davis clocked in at 1:01.62 for fourth, and Kapinos and Gaudreault finished third and fourth with times of 2:21.64 and 2:22.35, respectively.

Alex Mustardo placed third in the 3000 meter steeplechase event at 12:22.68, and Nora Letendre and Katie Burns took fifth and sixth in the 10000 meter run. Letendre ran a time of 41:13.97 and Burns finished in 42:51.93 to earn points for Springfield.

The Pride relay teams also kicked off the outdoor season with strong performances. The 4x400 meter team placed first with a time of 4:08.62 and the 4x100 meter quartet took third at 49.67 seconds.

Others that finished well in field events were Rhian Duggan in the pole vault and Haley Regan in the javelin. Duggan placed second with a height of 3.05 meters and Regan placed fourth with a distance of 37.04 meters.

The Pride head to Medford, Mass. next Saturday for the Snowflake Classic, hosted by Tufts University.
