Men's Tennis Plays Tough, But Still Falls to MIT, 9-0

Kyle Mersereau Springfield, Mass. -- April 25, 2013 -- MIT battled tough and eventually knocked off a resilient Springfield College men's tennis team, 9-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match this afternoon at the Julius Appleton Courts. The loss ended the Pride's season with a 7-9 overall record.

MIT is now 16-1 overall, and ends its regular season with a 5-0 mark in conference play. Springfield finishes 0-5 in the NEWMAC.

Springfield made it tough on the Engineers by extending matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles into the third set. By doing so, the overall match took nearly four hours to complete.

Senior Larry Pang defeated SC sophomore Kyle Mersereau at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-7 (2), (10-3). At No. 2 singles, senior Matthew Skalak defeated senior Ben Burnap, 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-5.

The match began with some spirited doubles play, with MIT copping all three matches. At No. 1 doubles, Pang and Skalak took care of SC's Burnap and Joe Giannelli, 8-5. Mersereau and Alex Orban of the Pride extended Brian Oldfield and Jeffrey Bu of MIT before falling, 9-8 (6) at No. 2. Finally, at No. 3 doubles, Troy Astorino and Jeffrey Sperling defeated Zac Goldstein and Cody Rodrigues, 8-2.

MIT's No. 3-6 singles all won their matches in straight sets. The closest match of the bunch came at No. 5 singles as Astorino defeated Goldstein, 7-5, 6-4.
