With the split, SC's second in two days, and third in five days, Springfield is now 7-9 overall, and 2-2 in league play. Wheaton moves to 11-11 overall, 2-4 in NEWMAC play.
In game #1, Wheaton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, with the aid of a walk, two sacrifices, and an RBI-single by senior 1B Stacey Kelleher (Brockton, Mass.). But the Pride came back immediately with two of their own in the bottom of that inning. Junior SS Jaimie Moran (Manchester, Conn.) knocked in two with a hard single to left.
Wheaton tied it at 2-all in the top of the third on an RBI single by sophomore 3B Kirsten Hunt (Milford, Conn.). But SC junior RF Caitlin Corry (Seekonk, Mass.) gave the home team a one-run lead in the bottom of that inning with an RBI single to center.
Springfield broke it open in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. A hit batter, a sacrifice bunt, and an error allowed one run to score. Then with two outs, Wlosek, who hails from Nutley, N.J., crashed a line-drive home run to left, producing the other two runs. Thus, SC led, 6-2.
The Pride's last two runs came in the last of the sixth on an RBI single by Wlosek and a sacrifice fly by Moran.
Senior lefthander Samantha Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and just one earned run for the win. She is now 4-3. Junior righthander Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, Mass.) took the loss. She is now 3-7.
Junior DP Bryn Worrilow (North Babylon, N.Y.) and senior LF Amanda Lyons (Eastchester, N.Y.) also had two hits for Springfield in game #1.
In game #2, Wheaton again jumped out to an early lead, 2-0, after one inning. Kelleher and sophomore DP Nicole DeRosa (Greenwich, Conn.) plated the runs with RBI singles. The Lyons then added another run in the top of the third, with senior CF Brady Benton scoring on an odd double-steal attempt. The runner on first, although out at second, knocked the shortstop down on her slide attempt, allowing Benton to score unscathed.
Springfield crept to within one run in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run to left by senior 1B Aimee Cassella (Southington, Conn.). But then Wheaton broke it open with a five-run fourth. Five of the first six runners scored in that inning, two of those runs on a walk and a wild pitch. Benton then smashed her three-run home run, and the Lyons began to cruise with their 8-2 lead at this point.
Springfield scored two more on a two-out, two-run home run to right-center by senior CF Angie Atkins (East Haddam, Conn.) in the seventh inning.
Freshman righthander Mary Fay (Stoughton, Mass.) picked up the win, her fifth in six decisions. She allowed four runs, all earned, and seven hits in going the distance. She walked one, and struck out none. For Springfield, sophomore Katie Anderson (Andover, Mass.), who lasted just 1/3 of an inning, took the loss (0-4).
