Baseball Cruises to 12-2 NEWMAC Win Over Emerson

Springfield, Mass. - April 17, 2014 - The Springfield College baseball team picked up a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win on Thursday, beating visiting Emerson, 12-2 on Berry-Allen Field.

Springfield was led by the bats of Keith Cotnoir (Westhampton, Mass.), Jared Hopkins (Cranston, R.I.) and Shane O'Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.) in the win. Cotnoir drove in three runs while Hopkins and O'Leary drove in two each. Frank Calabrese (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) each tallied two hits.

Tyler Kelly (Absecon, N.J.) earned the win on the mound in his first collegiate start for the Pride. Kelly went five innings, allowing three hits and just one run while striking out four. Springfield improves to 13-11 overall and 7-7 in the NEWMAC with the win. Emerson drops to 33-22 (1-13 NEWMAC) with the loss.

Emerson was led by James Sullivan (Medfield, Mass.) with three hits on the day and Cal Ciarcia (Dennis, Mass.) with two.

In the top of the third, Clint Fontanella (Pelham, N.H.) was hit by a pitch and the Lions loaded the bases on back-to-back singles by Jim Cain (Wakefield, Mass.) and Sullivan. Mitch Moormann (Hollywood, Fla.) drove in the Lions first run on a fielder's choice, scoring Fontanella for a 1-0 lead.

After a leadoff walk by Calabrese in the bottom of the fourth, Sean Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Dan Bergami (Schenectady, N.Y.) loaded the bases on back-to-back sacrifice bunts with errors on the Lions, leading to a bases loaded, no out situation. Cotnoir cleared the bases in the next at bat, on a deep double to the fence in left field to give the Pride a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Emerson's Connor Damiano (Randolph, N.J.) brought home Sullivan, grounding into a double play with the bases loaded to make it a one run game. Mitch Goldman (Uxbridge, Mass.) got out of the jam with a strikeout to end the inning with a 3-2 lead.

Springfield brought in two insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning, as Hopkins scored on a throwing error by the Emerson second baseman and Starr came home on a sacrifice fly by Smith to give the Pride a 5-2 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, O'Leary drove in the Pride's sixth run on a double that one-hopped the fence in left center, scoring Adam Zandri (Ridgefield, Conn.) for a 6-2 game. Hopkins made it a 7-2 game on a line drive single through the right side of the infield, scoring O'Leary.

The Pride tacked on five more runs in the eighth for a 12-2 advantage. After Billy Peterson (Wareham, Mass.) reached on an error by the second baseman, Calabrese drove him in on a deep double to left center. Calabrese later scored on a sacrifice fly by O'Leary. Springfield scored three more times in the inning, two on bases loaded walks and again on an RBI single by Billy Peterson (Wareham, Mass.).

Springfield will host its final home game of the season on Friday against WPI at 3:30 p.m. Emerson will be at Babson on Friday for a 3:30 start.
