Men's Volleyball Earns Top-Seed For NCAA Division III Championship

Springfield, Mass. - April 14, 2013 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team was awarded the top-seed in the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championship, which will take place April 26-28 at MIT's Rockwell Cage. The Pride will square off against the winner of the play-in game between Endicott College and Kean University.

The Pride, which was ranked first in the country in the latest AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll, earned one of three at-large berths into the field of nine teams. Springfield closed out the regular season winning its last 23 matches, and enters the Championship with a 29-3 record.

Springfield will square off in the national quarterfinals on Friday, April 26 against the winner of the Endicott (22-9) and Kean (25-7 ) at 12:30 pm. The play-in game between those two teams will be played on April 20 at Endicott at 7:00 pm.

On the same side of the bracket as Springfield, Baruch (33-5) will battle Stevens (25-8) on Friday at 3:00 pm. In the bottom half of the bracket, the University of California-Santa Cruz (15-7) plays Nazareth College (34-1) at 5:30 pm, while Juniata (24-11) will play Rivier College (26-11) at 8:00 pm. The championship continues with two semifinal matches on Saturday, April 27 and the championship match on Sunday, April 28.

Earlier this season, Springfield and Kean squared off on January 26th at the Rutgers Invitational. In the 25-13, 25-18, 25-11 victory over Kean, Springfield hit .441 as a team.

In that win, Mike Pelletier posted seven kills and seven digs, while Jimmy O'Leary recorded eight kills. Greg Falcone registered six kills and five blocks, and Mike Becker was credited with 24 assists.

Springfield and Endicott did not meet this season, but a year ago, the two teams played twice, with the Pride earning a pair of three-set wins.
