Winter Haven, Fla. - March 18, 2014 - The Springfield College baseball team cruised to a 12-3 win over New England College in eight innings on Tuesday in Winter Haven, Florida.
With the win, Springfield improved to 2-1 on the season while New England College drops to 1-2.
Eric Chase (Vernon, Conn.) earned the win on the mound for the Pride as he went 5.2 innings, scattering six hits and allowing just one earned run.
First-year Adam Zandri (Ridgefield, Conn.) was big at the plate, racking up a double and a triple to lead Springfield. Also having standout days at the plate were CJ Monroe (Wolcott, Conn.) and Sean Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.). Monroe went 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Smith recorded four singles in his five at bats.
The Pride stormed out to a 7-0 lead and never looked as it picked up its second win of the season. After RBI hits from Monroe and Frank Calabrese (East Longmeadow, Mass.) in the third, Springfield broke the game open with five runs in the fourth. Billy Peterson (Wareham, Mass.) had the key hit in the frame, roping a bases-loaded single to plate a pair of runs.
Springfield added three runs in the fifth, two of which came on a New England error, and tallied two more runs in the sixth. Monroe registered a sacrifice fly and Zandri scampered home on a wild pitch.
The Pride will continue its Spring Break trip in Florida, taking on Hope at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
