



Boston, Mass. -- September 29, 2012 -- Sam Carney led her Springfield College women's tennis team to a 9-0 shutout win over Suffolk University Saturday at Suffolk. SC won four of the six singles matches in straight sets.Carney, a senior from Franklin, Mass., had an excellent day. She first teamed with fellow senior Siana Green (Pomfret, Conn.) at number one doubles, defeating senior Kelly Conrad (Lanstuhl, Germany) and sophomore Erica LeBlanc (Londonderry, N.H.), 8-3.
Carney would later cruise by Conrad, 6-0, 6-1, in singles play.
At number two doubles, the pairing of junior Sydney Streimer (Mystic, Conn.) and senior Vanessa Senecal (Seekonk, Mass.) handled the Suffolk duo of sophomore Adrianna Garrett (Plymouth, Mass.) and senior Allison Weisenbach (Hamden, Conn.), 8-4.
And at number three doubles, it was the senior duo of Erin Woodbury (Portland, Me.) and Amy Buttarazzi (Scarborough, Me.) defeating junior Elizabeth Arkins (Melrose, Mass.) and junior Stacey Politis (Saugus, Mass.), 8-1.
In singles, straight set winners, besides Carney, included Woodbury at No. 3 (8-2), freshman Melanie Thulin (Manchester Center, Vt.) at No. 5 (6-3, 6-4), and Senecal at No. 6 (6-3, 6-1).
On Tuesday (Oct. 2), Springfield will host Smith in a NEWMAC conference match-up at 4 pm at the newly-renovated Appleton Courts.

Toby Coffin G’01, enters his second year as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Springfield College. Coffin, who has coached at numerous high schools in the area, will look to build a program which will contend for a conference crown.
