Temple Comes on Strong to Defeat Men's Gymnastics, 338.200 to 333.500

Ryan Ponce Springfield, Mass. -- February 25, 2011 -- The Temple University men's gymnastics team inched ahead throughout the meet to defeat Springfield College, 338.200 to 333.500, tonight at SC's Blake Arena. Pride junior Ty Evans took the all-around with a score of 85.300.

After four rotations, Springfield was within one point of the Owls. But Temple pulled away with the final two events. For Springfield, it was its highest score of the season.

Each school had three winners in the six events.

Temple produced victors in the pommel horse with senior Patrick McLaughlin (Shrewsbury, Pa.) at 14.600, in the parallel bars with sophomore Alex Tighe (Brookfield, Wisc.) and McLaughlin each at 14.700, and in the high bar with senior Blake Collins (Columbia, Md.) at 14.200.

Springfield, meanwhile, produced winners in the floor exercise with sophomore Jimmy Pezzino (Buffalo, N.Y.) at 14.700, in the still rings with freshman Ryan Ponce (Tolland, Conn.) at 14.500, and in the vault with Pezzino and Evans (San Jose, Calif.) tying at 15.400.

Evans had a great meet for the Pride. Not only did he tie for first in the vault, he also finished tied for second in the floor (13,500), tied for second in the rings (14.300), finished third in the parallel bars (14.500), finished third in the high bar (14.000), and tied for fifth in the pommel horse (13.600).

Springfield will compete three more times on the Blake Arena floor, including next Sunday, March 6 against Army at 1 pm.
