Springfield, Mass. - January 25, 2014 - Alex Niemiec (Chicopee, Mass.) and Ryan O'Connell (Middleboro, Mass.) led the Springfield College men's track & field team on Saturday as the host school finished fourth out of 10 teams.
RPI won the meet with 112 points, Ramapo came in second with 102 points, Eastern Connecticut State finished third with 66 points and Springfield placed fourth with 60 points. Westfield State (52 points), Stevens Institute (45), Trinity (42), Assumption (32), American International (24) and Worcester State (20) rounded out the top 10.
Niemiec was a double event winner on Saturday, sweeping both the high jump and the long jump. The freshman won the high jump with a mark of 6'8", four inches better than his nearest competitor. Niemiec also won the long jump with a leap of 22-08, besting the 33-athlete field by nearly 10 inches.
O'Connell was the Pride's only other winner on the day, taking the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:48.65.
Springfield's 4x800 meter relay team of O'Connell, Jacob Simons (Naugatuck, Conn.), Joe Geurds (Albany, N.Y.) and Michael Sherry (Loudonville, N.Y.) finished second with a time of 8:31.61.
The Pride also had a pair of fourth place performances. P.J. Andrews (Lincoln, R.I.) took fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 48-08.75 and Ryan Gower (Barrington, R.I.) took fourth in the 200 meter (23.57).
