Springfield, Mass. - January 4, 2014 - The Springfield College women's basketball team earned its seventh-straight win, 51-38 over visiting Clark University on Saturday in Blake Arena in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
Springfield improves to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play with Saturday's win. Clark drops to 4-7 overall and 1-5 in the NEWMAC. This marks the best start for the Pride through 11 games since the 2004-2005 team also began the season 8-3.
Springfield was led by Tamara Tribble (White Plains, N.Y.), who was tremendous defensively, grabbing eight rebounds in the first half, all on defensive end. She finished the game with a game-high 14 rebounds, 13 of them defensive.
Danielle Racette (North Adams, Mass.), Heather Lewis (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Ava Adamopoulos (Ludlow, Mass.) each had a team-high eight points for Springfield.
Clark began the game on a 4-0 run until Racette got Springfield on the board with two free throws 2:19 into the game. Lexi Windwer (Milton, Mass.) tied it up a minute later, driving to the hoop for an easy layup. Springfield took its first lead of the game, 6-4, on a basket by Bickelhaupt on a nice feed from Racette 4:04 in.
Springfield scored nine unanswered points to take a 9-4 lead before a jumper by Ashleigh Condon (Hull, Mass.) pulled Clark within three points, but Windwer knocked down a big three-pointer for the Pride with 11:25 left in the first, putting the Pride up 12-6.
Both teams went scoreless for 6:16 until Racette knocked down two free throws with 2:02 left in the half to put the Pride up 18-12.
Springfield led by as much as nine before halftime as Tribble gave the Pride a 22-14 lead in the final minute of the half and Windwer tacked on a free throw to take a 23-14 lead into the locker room.
Lewis got things started for Springfield in the second half, coming down with an offensive rebound and putting it right back into the basket for a 25-14 lead.
The Pride took its first double-digit lead of the game on a basket by Lewis in the paint with 13:48 left in the half. Springfield led 29-18. Clark's Brooke Brennan (Weston, Mass.) drained a three-pointer at 13:20 to make it a 29-21 game, but the Pride went on to hold the Cougars scoreless for the next 6:03, until Condon hit a free throw at 7:17.
With 11:16 left to play, Springfield took a 14 point lead on a nice feed inside from Racette to Adamopoulos for a 35-21 game. The Pride extended the lead to 16 on a jumper from Emily Gins (Fort Myers, Fla.). Springfield took a 20-point lead, its biggest lead of the game off a three-pointer by Riley Fake (Brockport, N.Y.) with 5:11 left to play. Clark would come within nine points after two free throws by Gwyneth Ivory (Ashland, Mass.) with under two minutes left on the clock, but the Pride closed out the game on a 6-2 run for the conference win.
Bickelhaupt finished the game with eight rebounds and six points for the Pride. Windwer added six points. Springfield shot 16-of-52 (30.8%) from the field, 2-of-10 (20%) from behind the arc and 17-of-25 (68%) from the foul line.
Clark was led by Megan Grondin (Cumberland, Maine) with a team-high eight points. Esther Cohn (Chapel Hill, N.C.) added seven points and seven rebounds and Emily Reilly (Marlborough, Mass.) finished the day with six points. The Cougars shot 9-of-58 (15.5%) from the field, 2-of-17 (11.8%) from three and 18-of-23 (78.3%) from the foul line.
Next on deck for Springfield is a conference match up at Wellesley on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Clark will host Wellesley on Thursday at 7:00.
