Cambridge, Mass. - March 9, 2010 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team swept in-state foe Harvard University in three games on Tuesday evening in a non-conference contest. The Pride bested the Crimson by the set scores of 37-35, 30-18, 30-26.
Springfield, which vaulted into the top ranking in the country in this week's AVCA Coaches Top 15 Poll, upped its record to 12-6 on the season. Harvard falls to 1-10 this year.
The teams stayed close throughout the first set as the opening stanza included 21 ties and 11 lead changes. The Pride utilized clutch serves down the stretch to claim the 37-35 win in the opening frame. With the score tied at 35, Mike Pelletier ripped an ace and a Crimson attack error allowed Springfield to snag the first game.
Springfield led from wire to wire in the second game to claim a 30-18 set win. The Pride offense was clicking as it pounded out 17 kills en route to a .438 hitting percentage in the frame. Nally was unstoppable in the set as he registered six kills on seven errorless swings.
The Crimson couldn't hold onto an early set lead in the third, falling by a 30-26 score. Alberto Bravo had a standout set for Springfield as he posted six kills, two blocks, and two service aces. After trailing 10-8, Bravo sparked a 3-0 Springfield run as he registered both of his aces to give Springfield a lead it would not give up the rest of the way.
Erik Kuld led all hitters with 15 kills and Matt Jones was close behind with 14 in the match. Nicola Ivica chipped in 12 kills and four block assists while Gil Weintraub collected 41 assists in the loss.
AJ Nally recorded 13 kills and eight digs to lead the visitors, while Eric Shoemaker delivered 24 assists and Brad Seislove handed out 19 assists off the bench. Cal Palumbo chipped in with nine kills and Greg Falcone tallied seven kills at a .500 clip. Bravo finished with eight kills for SC.
Springfield will return to the courts on Friday evening for an important conference match at Princeton. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
