Spaulding of Southern Maine Holds on to Win the Decathlon at the New England Division III's; Williams Leads After One Full Day

Springfield College Hosts New England Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships Decathlon Results

Springfield, Mass. -- May 1, 2009 -- On the second day of overall competition at the New England Track & Field Championships at Blake Track at Springfield College, James Spaulding of Southern Maine held on to win the decathlon competition with a score 6,679 points. Spaulding edged out Jared Engelking of Tufts who crept to within 97 points. Meanwhile, after one full day of competition (after four events), Williams leads the field with 29 points, followed by MIT's 24.

In the decathlon, Engelking finished second with 6,582 points. He was followed by Eric Jonash of Williams (5,895), Benjamin Roy of WPI (5,940), Isaac Nicholson of Williams (5,766), Brett Epler of Bates (5,736), Travis Hery of MIT (5,343), and Greg Coleman of Springfield (5,225).

The remaining team points after the first full day, and with one day remaining, are as follows: WPI is in third with 16 points, followed by Trinity (14), Bates and Southern Maine (13), Tufts (11), Keene State and Coast Guard (10), Westfield State (9), Colby-Sawyer (5), and Springfield and Wesleyan (1).

Besides Spaulding, winners included Bryan Kolacz of Keene State in the hammer throw at 189-10, Stephen Morton of MIT in the long jump (24-2 1/4), and Anthony Raduazo of Williams in the 10,000 meters (32:20.48).
