Game 2 Box Score

Babson Park, Mass. -- April 14, 2012 -- Visiting Springfield College scored 19 runs on 23 hits en route to a sweep of host Babson College in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. With the two victories, the Pride improved to 19-10 overall and 10-2 in league play, while the Beavers fell to 16-15 overall and 6-6 in the conference.

The opener saw Springfield grab an early 3-0 advantage in the first, as junior Kelly Blake (Watertown, Conn.) hit a two-run double to right and later scored on a single up the middle by classmate Chelsea Bender (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). The Pride threatened for more in the frame, but Beavers' sophomore starter Christina Miquel (Emerson, N.J.) pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam.

Springfield got two more runs in the second, as senior Kasey Kelly (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) drove in sophomore Christina Leader (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) with a double to right center and came home two batters later when junior Breann Joyce (Trumbull, Conn.) hit an RBI-single to right. The Pride then tacked on one in the third on an RBI groundout by sophomore Ally Rivelli (North Kingstown, R.I.) and two in the fourth when Joyce doubled in a run and eventually scored on a bunt single by senior Tess Gagliano (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.) to build an 8-0 lead.

That was more than enough for Springfield sophomore starter Ashley Marino (Harrison, N.Y.), who limited Babson to just two hits in the five-inning shutout win. The right-hander allowed a leadoff double to sophomore Christa Shorette (Southington, Conn.) in the third and a one-out single by senior captain Nicole Latini (East Bridgewater, Mass.) in the fourth while also walking a pair and striking out five as she improved to 9-5 on the year.

Miquel (3-2) suffered the loss in game one for Babson, giving up four runs in an inning-plus. Junior Megan Brain (Pompton Plains, N.J.) added three innings of relief, allowing four runs, and first-year Meghan Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J.) tossed a scoreless fifth for the Beavers.

Springfield continued to slug away in game two, scoring seven runs in the first and three more in the second on its way to the 11-1, five-inning victory. The first inning was highlighted by a two-run triple by Blake and a three-run homer by Gagliano, while the second featured a two-run double by Joyce. Joyce then added a solo home run in the fourth to cap the visitors' scoring.

Babson plated its lone run of the day in the bottom of the fifth, as junior Kelly King (Kennebunk, Maine) singled to left, took second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a base hit by junior Breezy DiPietro (Essex, Mass.), and scored on an error.

Joyce finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs to pace Springfield in game two, while Blake and Rivelli each went 2-for-3. Blake also joined Gagliano with three runs driven in. Pride starter Jennifer Joseph (Stamford, Conn.) allowed just three hits and struck out four in three scoreless innings to earn the win, as she improved to 9-3 on the year. First-year Caisie Cadorette (Dartmouth, Mass.) added a scoreless inning of relief, striking out a pair, and senior Stephanie Barrett (Plaistow, N.H.) got the final three outs and surrendered one unearned run.

King went 2-for-2 with a run scored for Babson, while sophomore starter Tess Rubega (Norwich, Conn.) took the loss in the circle, dropping her record to 7-4. Hayes once again came on in relief for the Beavers, allowing four runs and striking out four over the final 4 2/3 innings.
