CORTLAND, N.Y. – February 8, 2009 - Cortland outscored Springfield by nearly four points on balance beam in what was otherwise a closely contested meet and the Red Dragons defeated the Pride, 184.25-181.25, at Corey Gymnasium.
Cortland scored a 46.425 on beam to Springfield’s 42.60. The Red Dragons edged the Pride by less than a tenth of point on vault, and Springfield on uneven bars and floor exercise by less than six-tenths of a point each.
Cortland freshman Cristina Speirs (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage) won balance beam with a 9.45 as the Red Dragons took the top five spots in the event. Junior Jenn Najuch (North Tonawanda) finished second (9.375), followed by junior Alyssa Neely (Allentown, PA/Parkland) with a 9.325, sophomore Kasey Cutler (East Hampton, CT) with a 9.275 and junior Christine Haungs (Derby/Lake Shore) with a 9.00.
Speirs and Haungs tied for second on vault, each with a 9.60. Haungs also placed second on floor exercise with a 9.55 and tied for third on uneven bars with an 8.90. She finished with a combined 37.05 in her first collegiate all-around performance.
Senior Kelly Villa (Amherst/Sweet Home) placed second on uneven bars (9.20), while Neely and sophomore Lauren Pytel (Naugatuck, CT/Holy Cross) were part of a three-way tie for fourth on floor exercise (9.375). Pytel also finished in a tie for third on bars (8.90), freshman Cady Tinney (Nichols/Tioga Central) was fifth on vault (9.525) and junior Chris Cate (Concord, NH) finished sixth on vault (9.50).
Springfield gymnasts captured three individual event titles. Brittany Davis (Shelby, NC) won vault with a 9.65, Jenna Williams (Townsend, MA) was the winner on bars with a 9.25 and Kayleigh Davis (Whitefield, NH) won floor exercise with a 9.70. Kayleigh Davis also tied for third on uneven bars (8.90).
Freshman Carly Flynn (Franklin, MA) turned in three-top six efforts for the Pride. She finished third on floor exercise (9.40), fourth on vault (9.55) and sixth on uneven bars (8.80). Ericca Castagna (Topsfield, MA) tied for fourth on floor exercise (9.375) and Jacqui Mazzola (Framingham, MA) was Springfield’s top finisher on balance beam in sixth place (8.925).
