Steffen Siebert enters his second season as the head coach of the Springfield College men's soccer program in 2013. Siebert became just the ninth head men’s soccer coach at Springfield College since 1906, and only the sixth since the 1909 season.Siebert also serves as an assistant professor in the College’s School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.
Siebert had been a Teaching Fellow in SC’s Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation /PE from August of 2009 until 1012. He had also been an Adjunct Professor in the College’s Psychology Department since January of 2011 until the 2012.
In addition, Steffen had been the associate head coach of the Springfield College men’s soccer program under Peter Haley since August of 2009. Siebert assisted in all aspects of the head coaching responsibilities on and off the field, as well as during and after the fall seasons.
During Coach Siebert’s first season at the helm of the program, the Pride experienced one of the most successful seasons in the past 15 years. Siebert led the team to the 2012 NEWMAC Championship final, just the second time that Springfield has advanced that far since 1999. En route to the title match, Springfield rattled off a 6-1-1 record in its final eight contests, going undefeated against several regional powerhouses including Babson, MIT, and Coast Guard.
In addition to the Pride’s team success, Coach Siebert had a pair of players earn all-conference recognition and four student-athletes take home academic all-conference accolades.
Since his arrival on campus in 2009, Siebert has been instrumental in changing the culture of the Springfield College men's soccer program. In the two seasons he acted as associate head coach, the Pride owned a record of 22-13-5 and reached the NCAA Division III Championship for just the second time in program history. In fact, it marked the first time since 1989-1990 that Springfield had consecutive years with double-digit victories.
Siebert has been the head coach of two local clubs in the past few years. He was the head coach of the Sportsworld Premiere Soccer Club in East Windsor, Conn. from September of 2009 to October of 2010. He was then the head coach of the U17 Men’s Premiere Soccer Club in Easthampton, Mass. from October of 2010 to the present.
In addition, Siebert also holds U.S. Soccer A, B, C, and D licenses, and holds several certifications and diplomas from the NSCAA.
Siebert holds bachelor of science degrees in psychology and exercise science from Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo. which he received in May, 2009. He also received his master’s of education degree in psychology from Springfield College in December of 2010.
Siebert will take over for Haley, who had been the head coach at Springfield College for the previous 27 years or since 1985. The number of head men’s soccer coaches at SC is a story in itself. Following the first three years of the program, George Affleck took over the head coaching reigns from 1909 to 1928. Affleck was followed by John D. Brock from 1929-1947, and then by Irv Schmid from 1948 to 1984. Fred Geisler took over for Schmid for one season (1963) before Schmid took over once again.
Minus Geisler, essentially there have only been four head men’s soccer coaches at Springfield College – Affleck, Brock, Schmid, and Haley -- in a span of 103 years.
