Springfield, Mass. -- October 6, 2009 -- Senior Alanna Dick won a hard-fought match at No. 6 singles to give her Smith College women's tennis team the clinching team point in a 6-3 victory over Springfield College tonight in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match at Springfield's Appleton Courts. The win gives the Pioneers a 3-2 record, while Springfield falls to 1-5. Alanna Dick (Winthrop, Maine) give her team the all-important fifth point by defeating SC junior Talya Pessolano (Springfield, Mass.) by a score of 7-5, 6-4. A short time later, sophomore Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, Ill.) gave Smith the final team point by defeating SC freshman Erin Woodbury (Yarmouth, Maine) at No. singles, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Smith took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Singles winners for Springfield included junior Amy Shaw (Walpole, Mass.) at No. 1, and senior Funmi Olowookere (Woonsocket, R.I.) at No. 4. Scores below.

Toby Coffin G’01, enters his third year as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Springfield College. Coffin, who has coached at numerous high schools in the area, will look to build a program which will contend for a conference crown.
