Women's Gymnastics Improves, but Ithaca Takes First

Brittany Baglow Springfield, Mass. -- January 30, 2011 -- Brittany Baglow finished first with the meet's top score, a 9.750, in floor exercise, but it was Ithaca College that won the women's gymnastics meet with a team score of 182.575 to Springfield College's 181.400 this afternoon at SC's Blake Arena. The meet was billed as the second annual Tumble for Teal, designed to create awareness for gynecological cancer.

Ithaca entered today's meet as the nation's top scoring team in Division III, averaging 183.500 points through its first two meets. Meanwhile, Springfield had not scored more than 177.000 points through its first three meets.

Thus, despite the loss, SC Head Coach Cheryl Raymond had to be pleased with the team's tremendous improvement in the past week.

Freshman Jenna Van Dusen (Lewiston, N.Y.) of Ithaca led the pack with her all-around score of 37.450. The next two all-around scores, however, were supplied by the Pride. Junior Carly Flynn (Franklin, Mass.) scored a 36.950. Baglow, a sophomore from Amherst, Mass., had a score of 36.525.

Van Dusen tied for first in the vault with a 9.525, and tied for first in the bars with a 9.125. She also finished second in the floor (9.525), and fourth in the beam (9.275).

For Springfield, Baglow finished with a 9.750 in the floor exercise. It was not far off the Springfield College record in that event -- a 9.825 by Shanna Larocque in 2001. Baglow also finished sixth in the beam (9.000), tied for seventh in the vault (9.175), and finished eighth in the bars (8.600).

Flynn also had a very good meet. She placed third in the beam (9.375), fourth in the bars (9.000), fourth in the vault (9.375), and seventh in the floor (9.200).

Also for Springfied, senior Christina Pagella (Westfield, Mass.) tied for first in the vault with a 9.525. The other first-place finishers not mentioned yet include Ithaca junior Lauren Moroch (Old Bridge, N.J.), who had a score of 9.425 in the beam, and Ithaca freshman Shilanna Gallo (Windham, N.H.), who tied for first in the bars with a 9.125.
