Springfield, Mass. - January 1, 2013 - Jordan Rote tallied a team-best 16 points to help the Springfield College men's basketball team knock off Colby, 75-57, in the Hampton Inn/Naismith Classic on Tuesday evening in Blake Arena.
Springfield will play for the championship on Wednesday evening at 7:30 against SUNY Purchase, who prevailed over Roger Williams, 58-51. The consolation game will be played at 5:30 pm.
Springfield 75, Colby 57
Rote's 16 points came on 4-of-8 shooting, as he netted four three pointers to go along with six rebounds. Alex Berthiaume added 14 points, and Josh Altman came off the bench to total 13 points and seven rebounds. Robbie Burke chipped in eight points and seven boards, and Sean Martin was credited with seven helpers. Springfield shot 28-53 (52.8%) and connected on seven of their 12 three-pointers.
Ryan Jann led the way for Colby with 13 points off the bench. Shane Rogers added 10 points, and Chris Hudnut totaled seven points and four rebounds. Colby shot just 19-for-64 (29.7%) for the game, including 5-for-24 from downtown.
The victory boosts Springfield's record to 9-3, while Colby dropped to 2-7.
A physical first half was a back-and-forth start before the Mules snagged an early 17-14 lead following a Jann three-pointer at the 11:22 mark. Springfield responded with the game's next 10 points, over a 3:59 span, to open a 24-17 lead after Rote canned a deep three with a defender in his face.
Springfield maintained its cushion and Altman peeled off a screen for another triple with 16 ticks left in the first half as the Pride opened up a 38-26 lead. Jann finished inside at the buzzer to make it a 10-point game heading into intermission.
A pair of free throws from Hudnut brought the visitors within eight just 1:02 into the half, however, Springfield put the game away in the next 3:43. The Pride put together a 14-2 burst, highlighted by two three-pointers from Rote, as its lead ballooned to 20.
Springfield would eventually lead by as much as 27 down the stretch as it cruised to the 75-57 non-conference victory.
Purchase 58, Roger Williams 51
Andre Nixon registered a game-high 18 points to lead SUNY Purchase past Roger Williams, 58-51, in the second game of the Hampton Inn/Naismith Classic on Tuesday night in Blake Arena. The Panthers will advance to play host Springfield in the title game on Wednesday evening.
Purchase improves to 7-1, while the Hawks drop to 4-5.
Justin Person was the only other Panther to register in double figures, netting 11 points, while David Haughton pulled down a team-best six rebounds.
For Roger Wiliams, James LeCardi led the way with 11 points, and Ryan Paumbo posted nine points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals. The Hawks were hampered by 23 turnovers in the game.
Neither team shot the ball particularly well, with Purchase going 18-for 47 (38.3%) and Roger Williams hitting 19-for-51 (37.3%).
The Hawks owned an early 9-4 advantage following a three-pointer by Adam Cook, but the first half would prove to be a slugfest, with neither team able to grab a strong hold. The Panthers responded to take a 15-11 lead on a Craig Davis layup, only to have Roger Williams answer with a 8-0 burst to seize a 19-15 lead with 5:56 left.
The Panthers looked to their big man, Joel Neri, in the final minutes of the stanza, and he recorded six-straight points to help Purchase own a 24-21 lead at the half.
The lead changed hands eight times in second half, the last coming on a Nixon three with 6:11 left, which put Purchase up for good at 42-41. Roger Williams would get as close as three on a Palumbo layup with 4:15 on the clock, but the Panthers hit 9 of their 12 free throws in the last 2:29 to seal the game.
