Riverside, Calif. -- January 14, 2011 -- Greg Falcone produced a nice .714 hitting percentage for the match, but despite such a lofty statistic for the visitors, it was the Cal Baptist men's volleyball team defeating Springfield College, 3 sets to 0, in the opening match of SC's 2011 season this aftenoon on the west coast.
Set scores were 25-13, 25-19, 25-19, in favor of the Lancers.
With the win, Cal Baptist is now 2-3 on the season, while Springfield is now 0-1. Springfield was recently ranked #1 in the nation in the AVCA Division III pre-season poll. The Pride is the defending national champion in Division III.
An All-American middle blocker, Falcone had six kills and just one error in seven swings. His six kills tied for the most by an SC player along with Jeff Coen. Alistair Matthews finished with four kills. Mike Becker finished with 20 set assists for the Pride.
For the Lancers, Sebastien Steigmeier had a match-high 13 kills and a .364 hitting percentage. He was followed by Levi Cabral with 12 kills and a .391 hitting percentage.
The closest SC came in any single set was when Cal Baptist led in set No. 2 by a score of 21-19. The Lancers, however, finished off that set with a 4-0 run to win it. In the first set, SC trailed 13-10 before the Lancers ended it with a 12-3 run.
Later tonight, Springfield will play Hope International University in Fullerton at 7 pm local time. Tomorrow at 1 pm local time, SC will once again play at Cal Baptist.
